Practical prep

Pack for Britain.
Plan for change.

August starts still mean Atlantic fronts, wet descents, and cold nights in the hills. Treat this as research scaffolding — then read the current organizer brief.

Checklist

Bike & contact

  • All-road / gravel setup that rolls well and handles rough doubletrack
  • Tyres with enough volume for mixed UK surfaces (GBDIVIDE mentions ~40 mm minimum as a guide)
  • Reliable braking in prolonged wet; spare hanger, plugs, patches
  • Lights for long days and possible night riding if your plan allows

Pack & sleep

  • Layered clothing for rain, wind, and cool Highland nights
  • Sleep system suited to wild camping norms where legal/ethical
  • Leave No Trace: pack a trowel; GBDIVIDE emphasizes catholes / waste discipline
  • Resupply strategy without pre-arranged caches if self-supported rules apply

Weather & terrain

  • Expect four seasons in a day across Cornwall → Wales → Borders → Highlands
  • Watch organizer notices for diversions (wildfire / storm / infrastructure closures have featured in recent years)
  • Mud, farm tracks, and steep punches reward pacing over ego
  • Carry navigation that works offline when mobile signal drops

Navigation & admin

  • Official GPX / route version for the edition you are studying
  • Backup device or paper notes for critical junctions
  • #noflyride travel planning if you intend to enter (since 2020)
  • Emergency contacts and UK mountain/coastal weather awareness

Self-supported typically means no support crews and no pre-arranged resupply in the spirit of ultra bikepacking; the 2020 edition was deliberately stricter (“self-sufficient”). Always verify the year’s rulebook.
